Because of the large number of students missing from Room 18 today, we didn't run Centers. Instead we worked through 4 stations.
1) Gordon Korman novel study.
2) Math Unit Review - Fractions
3) Mask Writing
4) Computers/First Nations Children's Book

After recess, we continued on with pods during Math.
1) Computers
2) Math Unit Review - corrected
3) Fraction Number Lines/Equivalent Fractions
* Remember Math test on Thursday, May 2!

The students were able to exchange and take out new library books before lunch.

After lunch, we continued to work on our Mask stories.

Phys Ed finished off the day.

We kicked off a new week with day 1 of centers. The students are continuing to work on reading their Gordon Korman novels at Guided Reading.

After recess, we completed 3 stations in Science.
1) Computers
2) Wheel and Axles
3) Inclined Planes

Students were given the test date for their open book Social test...Monday, May 6. We went over the importance of organization and reviewing their notes to study.

After lunch, we completed 3 stations for Math.
1) Subtraction with borrowing
2) Equivalent fractions
3) Fractions on a number line
Our fractions unit test will be on Thursday, May 2. The students will get their review tomorrow.

The day finished in Phys Ed.

We completed Day 2 of Centers this morning. The students each choose a Gordon Korman book for their novel study. We will be incoporating all of the reading strategies we have looked at from the year into the novel study.

After recess, we worked through 3 Math stations.
1) Computers
2) Fraction Number Lines
3) Comparing Fractions

We then continued to work on our Voice Masks during Writing. After lunch, we used these masks to begin writing our narrative pieces that use the mask as a voice.

Mrs. Bernath took the students for Phys Ed today before the last recess.

We also continued to work on our Social Studies First Nations Legends children's books. Some students are wrapping up this activity.

The students were introduced to a new set of Centers today and completed day 1. We wrapped up our synthesis unit at guided reading and will start with our novel study tomorrow.

After recess, the students continued to work with Fractions.
Station 1- Computers
Station 2 - Ordering fractions
Station 3 - Fraction Number Lines

The students had library with Mrs. Schentag before lunch.

We started working on our masks during 6+1 Writing. The students will be using these masks for a writing activity tomorrow.

French and Phys Ed closed out the day.

I would like to congratulate the students on a job well done at the track meet yesterday. I was impressed!

We completed Day 3 of Centers this morning.

After recess, we continued to work on comparing fractions. The students used various manipulatives to help them to compare. The Pods were as follows...
1) Computers
2) Comparing fractions using manipulatives
3) Pizza Fraction game

Students then shifted into Writing where they used quick writes to practice using voice in their writing. We are working on showing feeling and expression in our writing. The students completed two quick writes....1) you are being chased by a dog and are very fearful, 2) you are floating on a lake and are feeling very relaxed.  The students did an excellent job using their "voice" to demonstrate these feelings.

After lunch, we continued to work on our children's books in Social Studies. The First Nations legends are coming along very nicely!

French and Phys Ed closed out the day.

We continued with day 2 of Centers this morning. Another wonderful job everyone!!

After recess, the students enjoyed Art class with Mrs. Schentag.

We started a partner Problem Solver today that focuses on using fractions and working backwards to solve. We will continue this next class.

The day wrapped up with French and Phys Ed.

Reminders...
- Please be at school no later than 8:45 tomorrow morning. The bus is leaving on time!!
- Bring a bagged lunch tomorrow as students will not be allowed to purchase from the canteen.

The students were introduced to a new set of centers this morning. Great day 1 everyone!!

After recess, we started our next Math unit: Fractions and Decimals. The students worked through 3 stations:
1) Computers
2) Identifying and coloring given fractions.
3) Comparing fractions using a fraction chart.
The Measurement "Show What You Know" was also given back to the students. Please sign and return these tomorrow.

We then moved onto our next trait in Writing...Voice. We looked at various examples that provided different voices and demonstrated different emotions. We will be using voice on various short writes next class.

The students then headed down to Phys Ed where they continue to practice for Wednesday's track meet. Please make sure you are here by 8:45 as the bus is leaving asap Wednesday morning!

We wrapped up the day with discussion about First Nation folklore and legends. Each student was given a copy of a legend that they must now paraphrase and turn into a children's book.

We wrapped up Day 4 of Centers this morning. Great job boys and girls!! We are also wrapping up the Synthesizing and Summarizing unit at Guided Reading. We are currently working on our last activity, Word Splash.

After recess, the students wrote their Measurement unit test. We will start our new unit, Fractions and Decimals, on Monday.

The students had Library with Mrs. Schentag before lunch.

After lunch, we worked on our expository writing pieces for one last class. I'm excited to read the finished products!!

French and Phys Ed closed out our week.

After a short assembly this morning, we worked through 3 stations:
1) PJ Gillen Petting Zoo (Math)
2) Social Studies Expository Writing
3) Computers

During Math, we completed Pods.
1) Corrected Math Review (Test is on Friday, April 12)
2) PJ Gillen Petting Zoo
3) Computers

During our Writing and Social Studies classes today, we continued to work on our Expository First Nations piece. This piece is due on Friday, April 12. Students have 3 more 1/2 hour classes to finish so some may choose to bring this home for homework if they feel they may need more time.

We continued with Centers this morning and completed day 2 of the cycle.

After recess, we discussed friction and readied ourselves for an experiment next class where we will measure the force of gravity required to move an object with various levels of friction acting on it.

The students then headed to Art.

After lunch, we worked through Math pods.
1) Computers
2) Design a PJGillen petting zoo (calculating area and perimeter)
3) Unit review - due for tomorrow! If students didn't finish in class, it is homework. Remember, test is Friday!

Phys Ed closed out the day!

Welcome back everyone! I hope everyone had some time to relax and put their feet up! Too bad the weather didn't want to cooperate with us!

We jumped right back into the thick of things today. We completed day 1 of a new set of Centers this morning. The students completed a Synthesising activity that we started before break during Guided Reading.

After recess, Room 20 had Art.

After lunch, we continued to work on the problem solver we started before break. As our school division's problem solver quickly approaches, we continue to sharpen our problem solving skills!

French and Phys Ed wrapped up the day.
