We completed Day 2 of Centers this morning. We started a new reading strategy...predicting. The students did a wonderful job using the title, pictures, and first page to make predictions for their stories.

We completed three stations in Math today. Students worked with front end rounding estimating while subtracting. We also worked on solving a problem where students had to identify the pattern. The third station was on the computer/Ipods.

Students also exchanged their library books.

The students were introduced to a new set of Centers this morning. Students were also given their Lesson 8 spelling words.

After recess, we completed an activity where we tested our reaction times. The students had to try to catch a ruler that was dropped by a classmate. We then completed our Human Body System posters by adding our final body system, the nervous system.

During Social Studies, we cleaned out our binders to get ready for our next unit. The students were also given back their tests. Please sign and return these tomorrow.

After lunch, the students were treated to a Willow Book Award presentation in the library.

We finished off the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud. We are beginning a new book, The Nexus Ring.

Reminders...
Tomorrow is Halloween. Please dress at lunch time. Students are to bring a lunch like any other day. I ask that you not send Halloween candy to school for snack or for lunches. Thank you!

We were treated to a great Junior Concert this morning. Flying Bob entertained us this morning with his super tricks and juggling!

We worked through three stations in math. Students practiced using compensation to estimate. We also practiced subtraction with borrowing as our next estimation strategies will be used with subtraction. Students also used the blog to practice their whole number skills.

After lunch, we wrote our Social Studies unit test. I will have these back to the students as quickly as I can.

The students then had French and Phys Ed.

We finished the day with Science. We are looking at our last body system...the nervous system. We discussed the role the nervous system plays in our bodies in regard to the other systems we have studied. We will be doing a reaction time experiment next Science class to test our nervous systems!

We worked through four different stations this morning. We didn't start a new set of Centers as Mrs. Gale and I made some changes with our guided reading groups. We will start a new set next week.

In Science, we completed our peer and self evaluations for our digestive system models. We also added our digestive system to our body posters.

The students has Health with Mrs. Schentag and Mr. Leidl before lunch.

After lunch, the students were introduced to our third and final estimation strategy, Compensation.

The students were treated to a double Phys Ed period to round out our week. Enjoy the weekend everyone and stay warm!!

We completed the fourth day in our center cycle this morning. Please remember to study for your spelling test tomorrow.

After recess, room 20 had Art with Mrs. Schentag.

We worked on solving a problem today during Problem Solving. Students worked on a patterns problem and used words to describe how they solved the problem. We are continuing to focus on using math language in our descriptions.

We then ventured down to French with Mrs. Orosz.

We finished the day with Phys Ed and working on some Math corrections.

We completed Day 3 of Centers this morning. The students are continuing to do a wonderful job making connections with the material they are reading.

After recess, we worked through 3 stations in math focusing on estimation. Students worked with compatible numbers at one station. At the next station, students could use either front end rounding or compatible numbers. The third station was on the computer/Ipods.

During 6+1 Writing, we are continuing to talk about transition words. I modelled for the students a How To...paragraph. Students then used a template and completed a "How To Clean My Room" paragraph using transition words for each step.  After lunch, students chose a topic of their own and wrote a How To paragraph.

Students than had Phys Ed with Mr. Leidl.

We wrapped up the day by discussing our review for the Social Studies test on Monday, October 29.

Students were given their Lesson 7 spelling words this morning. Remember to practice your words nightly.

We continued to practice using compatible numbers to estimate during Math. We also practiced using front end rounding.

Students headed down to library before lunch.

We continued to discuss transition words during 6+1 Writing. Students worked to put two paragraphs back together.

We finished the day with French and Phys. Ed.

We started off a new week with bowling this morning. The students enjoyed a few hours of having some fun with their classmates!

When we came back, the students continued to work on their digestive system models. Great job boys and girls!!

 

 

We also wrapped up our Social Studies unit before lunch. The students have been given a unit review which is due on Wednesday. The unit test will be on Monday, October 29.

 

 

We continued to work on Compatible Numbers in Math. Students are working on using estimation startegies that make numbers easy to work with.

 

We finished off the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We started a new set of Centers this morning. Students also wrote their lesson 6 Spelling Test and their TWAS. Please remember to read their wonderful letters home!

After recess, we learned a new estimation strategy...Compatible Numbers. We will continue to practice using this strategy, as well as Front End Rounding.

During Writing, we discussed transition words and how these types of words help our writing to flow better. We identified various transition words in a story that I wrote. We will dig into our own writing next week and try to incorporate transition words.

We then shifted to Social Studies where students tried to write out our national anthem. We also discussed the causes of Western expansion.

Students then had French and Phys Ed.

We finished the day working on our digestive system models. Students will have one more class to wrap up their models.

We wrapped up yet another set of Center activities this morning. Remember to study your spelling words for tomorrow's test.

The students then began working with their groups to construct their digestive systems. I'm excited to see the final projects as the students have come up with some very innovative ideas when constructing the different organs.

We then had Art with Mrs. Schentag.

After lunch, Room 20 went down to the Book Fair and checked out the many wonderful books.

We wrapped up our Problem Solver from yesterday before recess.

The day finished with Phys Ed and Read Aloud. The students are on the edge of their seats for the final chapter of our book, Chocolate River Rescue.

We completed day 3 of Centers this morning. The students continued to make wonderful connections to the text that we are reading.
After recess, the students completed a quick assessment on expanded numbers. We then discussed our first method of estimation, front end rounding. We also had time left to discuss connections and how to use math to prove our connection is correct.

Students also wrapped up their beginning/middle/end writing activity today. We will continue to work on the trait of organization over the next few weeks.

We wrapped up the day by completing our Famous Canadian paragraphs. Great job boys and girls!!

Our beautiful Monday morning started with day 2 of Centers. The students were given their spelling words for Lesson 6.

After recess, we continued to practice expanding numbers in Math. The students have done a wonderful job writing numbers in words, standard form, and expanded form. We will be moving on the estimation very shortly!

Our classroom headed down to Library before lunch.

We continued to work on our Beginning/Middle/End stories in the afternoon. Students are working on stretching the middle of their stories to be more detailed and interesting.

Students finished the day with French and Phys Ed.

Students wrote their spelling tests this morning and completed a TWAS for this week during Day 1 of Centers.

After recess, students added the circulatory system to their human body posters. We then moved on to our next system, the digestive system. The students were put into small groups today to start planning their 3-D models of the digestive system. The students have been asked to bring their material for Thursday as that is our next Science class.

We then continued to work on our final draft of our Famous Canadian paragraph.

Our afternoon started off with Math. The students are working on writing numbers in expanded form.
We have discussed various forms of writing numbers. The students are doing an excellent job! Keep up the super work!!

We finished off the week with Phys Ed and the next few chapters in our Read Aloud.

We continued to work on discussing making text to text, text to self, and text to world connections during Guided Reading this morning. The students worked extremely hard during day 3 of Centers and were excellent role models for two other teachers who were visiting our classroom from Yorkton.

After recess, we wrapped up the circulatory system in Science by completing a pulse activity. Students performed three different activities and compared their pulse rate for all three activities.

The students had Art with Mrs. Schentag before lunch.

During Math, we continued to work on writing numbers in words and identifying their place value. The students also worked on making a connection to a problem solver they were given. I'm excited to read what they came up with. We also had some time on the computers/Ipods to practice our whole number skills.

The day came to an end with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We wrote our Lesson 4 spelling test this morning and wrote a TWAS for this week. The students started a new set of centers this morning as well.

After recess, we continued to work on numbers to 1 000 000. Students worked at one station to find 5 numbers in magazines/newspapers and order then from least to greatest. We also continued to practice putting numbers to 1 000 000 into a place value chart and writing these numbers in words.

In 6+1 Writing, we discussed how stories need to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Students picked an idea and drew a quick sketch for their beginning, middle, and end. We then worked to compile a story using these sketches as a guide. Students were reminded to use a good lead with their story.

The students then had Phys Ed where it was Freebie Friday!

We wrapped up the week with Social Studies and continued to work on our Famous Canadian research.

We completed day 4 of Centers this morning. The students handed in their activities. We will start a new set of activities tomorrow. We concentrated on making connections during guided reading.

After recess, students continued to build numbers using Base Ten Blocks. We also discussed numbers to 1 000 000 and wrote them out in words. The students also had some time on the computer to practice Whole Number skills.

We then headed down to the library and exchanged our books.

Students worked with their partner to complete the Leads activity that we started last Writing class. Each pair was asked to create two new leads for a children's book they read. Great job boys and girls!

The day came to an end with French and Phys Ed.

We had a "cool" day in Grade 5. Super job this morning during Centers!! Remember to keep working on your Independent Reading blogs!

We worked through 3 stations in Science today. Students worked to complete their experiement posters at station 1. Station 2 focused on the circulatory system and defining some important words from the textbook. Station 3 was on the computer.

We spent a short time today working on our Famous Canadian project. Students gathered some important information today.

After lunch, we wrote our Math test. I hope to have these back to the students tomorrow.

We closed out the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We worked extra hard this morning to complete Day 2 of Centers. We are moving on to the Connections strategy during Guided Reading. We will be making text to text, text to self, and text to world connections throughout the month of October.

After recess, we started our next unit in Math, Whole Numbers. Students searched for 1 digit to 6 digit numbers in printed material. We created a collage of each of these types of numbers. We also worked to construct a variety of numbers using base ten blocks and identifying the value of each digit.

Students were introduced to Leads during Writing. We will be focusing on question leads, dialogue leads, and sound leads.

After lunch, we discussed various Canadian symbols. Each student picked a famous Canadian that they will be researching to write a descriptive paragraph.

We then enjoyed French and Phys Ed.

We finished the day working on our posters in Science.

Students were given their school pictures. If you are purchasing these pictures please have the money in by October 12.

We started off October with a new seating plan. I try to move the students around every month to give them a chance to share with some new faces.

After recess, we continued to work on our "Design Your Own Experiment" activity. Most groups are ready to present their information on a poster.

The students had Art with Mrs. Schentag to round off our morning.

During Math, students wrote a short multiplication equations assessment. We then discussed the Unit Review for the Wednesday's test. Some students did not have these at school or were not complete.

We finished the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud where we updated our agendas for the month of October and wrote a book review blog entry for Fatty Legs.
