Congratulations to all of the cross country runners that took part in the Autumn Summit today!

We wrote our lesson 3 Spelling Test this morning during Centers. Students also wrote a TWAS for this week.

Room 20 then had Art after recess.

We continued to practice making connections during our Math period today. The students are doing an excellent job!

We then headed down to French and had Phys Ed.

We ended the day with Read Aloud where we started a new novel, Chocolate River Rescue.

We worked very hard this morning during Day 3 of Centers. Remember to study your spelling words for tomorrow's spelling test!!

After recess, we worked through 3 stations in Math. Students continued to practice using multiplication to solve equations. Our unit test is on Wednesday, October 3. The students were given a review today that is due for tomorrow if they did not finish in class today. The third station was on the computer using the links on my blog.

During Writing, we continued to talk about RAFTS and identify these various components in a given number of writing prompts.
We also took a prompt and responded to the prompt with a writing piece.

The students then enjoyed a Phys Ed period with Mrs. Kirby.

Lastly, we closed out the day wrapping up our 7 Regions of Canada activity by comparing the two regions we have been working on in a Venn Diagram.

We worked extra hard during day 2 of Centers this morning. Keep up the great work!!

The students did a wonderful job running or walking during the Terry Fox Run after recess. Our school raised upwards of $8 000 again this year! Super!!

After lunch, students were introduced to RAFTS during 6+1 Writing. We have wrapped up the Ideas trait and are now moving into Organization.

French and Phys Ed closed out our day!

The students were introduced to a new set of Centers this morning. We are continuing to practice visualization at Guided Reading.

After recess, the students worked to complete their lung capacity activity from the other day. We also started to design and carry out an experiment that will measure our breathing rates. The students are working in small groups to test their experiements.

We continued to work on completing our graphic organizer to compare 2 of the 7 regions of Canada. We will be using a Venn Diagram to compare these two regions next class.

After lunch, we completed three stations in Math. The students completed an adding and subtracting equations assessment, as well as introduced to using multiplication to solve equations. The third station was on the computer or the Ipods.

Our day wrapped up with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We completed Day 4 of Centers this morning. Students were also given their new spelling words for this week.

After recess, we continued to work with solving equations using addition and subtraction. We were also able to wrap up our Detail Cube paragraphs. Super job Grade 5!!

We wrapped up the morning by working on our Social Studies 7 Regions of Canada research activity.
We will continue to work on this next class.

The students then had French and Phys Ed.

We finished the day with our lung capacity activity where students worked with a partner to measure their lung capacity.

The students worked very hard to complete day 3 of centers this morning. We wrote our spelling test as well as our TWAS. We started to discuss out first body system in Science, the respiratory system. We will be conducting an experiment next class to measure our lung capacity. Art finished off our morning. We worked through 3 math stations. Students worked one last time on writing equations to match word problems. We also started to solve equations. The third station was on the computer. We finished the day with Phys Ed and read aloud where students are visualizing what they saw during our reading of Fatty Legs. Enjoy your weekend!!

Grade 5 Parent Information Night - Details
We had yet another super day today! The students worked extra hard during day 2 of Centers this morning. Remember to study for your spelling test tomorrow.

After recess, the students had Art with Mrs. Schentag.

We continued to work on making connections in Math today. Students were shown a problem and were asked to visualize and sketch what they saw. Students then used these sketches to help them make a mathematical connection to the problem. I am very proud of the connections they were able to make!!

We then headed down to French with Mrs. Orosz.

We finished the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We enjoyed the September assembly this morning along with some entertainment from Mrs. Nagy's class! A job well done!!
We came back to class and completed a problem solving connection. The students are working extremely hard on making personal, math connections to various problem solvers.

After recess, we continued to work on Math. Students worked through three stations.
Station 1: Computers.
Station 2: Completed conneciton from earlier.
Station 3: Reviewed creating word problems from given equations.

Students then worked to construct Detail Cubes in which they used after lunch to describe any object of their choice.

Students had Phys Ed before recess.

Social Studies closed out our day with a short video about the 7 Regions of Canada. We completed a map labelling this 7 regions as well as started to work on a research project choosing two of these regions to compare.

A new set of Centers started off our day this morning. We are continuing to concentrate on the reading strategy of Visualization at Guided Reading.

After recess, the students continued to practice writing word problems to match given equations.

We then had library with Mrs. Schentag.

After lunch, the students worked to completed their descriptive webs with their partner. Great job everyone!!

Welcome back to another week!!
We wrapped up day 4 of Centers this morning. Students were also given a new set of spelling words for this week. Just a reminder to those students who were absent today...please collect the stations you missed when you return to school.

After recess, we wrapped up our summary activity discussing Healthy Foods. We then discussed Canada's Food Guide and completed a short activity where students had to recount everything they ate yesterday. Students then prepared a graph to compare a healthy diet to their diet yesterday.

In Social, we discussed and labelled a map of Canada.

After lunch, students were assessed in using variables in expressions. We then discussed how wording in problems can tell you what sign to use in an expression. Students worked in partners to match word problems to equations.

Our day wrapped up with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

Day 3 of Centers kicked off our morning today. The students wrote their spelling test and TWAS at Guided Reading. Please look forward to reading their TWAS and sign/return them on Monday. The students did a wonderful job!

We completed 3 stations for Math this morning. Students continued to work on using variables with patterns. We also continued to work on making connections with various problems. The third station was computers.

Students then started to work on a "Snap Shot" activity where they are working with a partner to use their senses to describe a picture.

During the afternoon, we watched a short video introduces the various provinces and territories of Canada.

The students then had French and Phys Ed.

We ended the week with Read Aloud.

We completed day 2 of Centers this morning. The students are doing a wonderful job with guided reading and using the visualization strategy with our short stories.

We then worked on a summary activity in Science discussing where our food comes from.

Our day wrapped up with Art.

Wow!! What a great day Grade 5! Each and every one of you worked so hard today. Super job!!

We completed Day 4 of Centers this morning. The students handed in their completed stations and we will start a new round of activities tomorrow. Remember, keep studying your spelling words!!

After recess, we worked through 3 stations in Math. At teacher table, the students were introduced to variables and expressions. We will continue with this tomorrow. At independent station, students worked on a Problem that had the students figure out how much car payments would be on a car of their choice. The third station was computer based.

Students then took their Narrow the Topic activity that we completed yesterday and wrote a short paragraph describing their topic.
We continued with writing after lunch to compile a list of 4 ideas related to the topic of friendship. We will continue to work on developing our own ideas for writing that we can make personal connections with.

The students then had Phys Ed.

We finished the day off with some Social Studies. We discussed the differences between a country, province/territory, and municipality. We also discussed the boundaries that seperate countries, provinces/territories, and municipalities.

Welcome to a new week!! We have an action packed week ahead of us.
We started off the day with Day 3 of Centers. The students were given their spelling words for this week. They have each written them in their agenda's to study throughout the week. The spelling test will be Friday, September 14. Students were also reminded that all Center activities will be collected after we finish Centers tomorrow.

After recess, we worked through three stations in Math. Station one was at the computers where the students practice patterns on the blog links. Station two and three had students work on Problems in which they had to find the pattern to solve. Super job everyone!!

The morning wrapped up with Library with Mrs. Schentag.

After lunch, we talked about how to Narrow the Topic in Writing. Students are encouraged to write about specific topics rather than broad ideas. We completed a short activity today that the students will use for a short writing activity later this week.

We finished off the day with French and Phys Ed.

The first week of school has officially come to an end!!
We started off our day with Centers. Students worked to completed their first TWAS together as a group. They will write an individual TWAS next Friday so keep your eyes open!

We worked through three stations in Science after recess. At station one, students were on the computers playing "Heal the Drummer." Station two was a reading comprehension station where students answered three questions after reading a short article. We worked together as a group at station 3 to read an article about remedies. Students were assigned homework to complete a home remedies chart. This chart is due on Monday.

We continued to discuss types of maps in Social Studies. Students completed a Venn Diagram comparing physical and political maps.

Math kicked off our afternoon. We wrapped up patterns and pattern rules and began practicing using patterns in problem solving.

We finished off the day with Phys Ed and read aloud.

We started our first day of Centers this morning. We worked at guided reading table to review how to pick a Just Right Book. We will continue with this next week.

After recess, we continued to practice identifying patterns and their pattern rules. The students did an excellent job today!!

Students were able to compile a few of their personal ideas during 6+1 Writing. We will be focusing on using our ideas in our writing. We worked on developing ideas for four different areas.

During Social Studies, we watched a short video that helped to explain what maps are used for and some of the characteristics of different types of maps.

Students then had French and Phys Ed.

We wrapped up the day with Science, where students had to communicate in 4 different areas about what they already know about the human body, and what they would like to know.

A special thank you to the SCC for putting on yet another great pancake breakfast!!

After recess, the students had a double period of Art with Mrs. Schentag.

We had our first Math lesson of the year after lunch. The students worked on identifying patterns and the pattern rules. We will continue practicing this tomorrow.

The students then headed down to Phys Ed.

Students were given book orders (due Monday, September 10) and Highlights order forms if they are interested. Please return the Highlights forms whether you are interested or not as we earn free items for the classroom with every yes or no slip returned.

What a great way to start the year!! We had a wonderful day today getting back into the swing of things.

We used the morning to review classroom expectations and jobs. We talked about the expectations of our agendas. The students will be bringing these home daily. Please remind them to bring them back every day. Classroom and school newsletters have also been sent home for the month of September.

After recess, the students enjoyed art with Mrs. Schentag. Please remember to bring a shoe box.

Our afternoon kicked off with Math. Students were introduced to the 8 stations which we will begin with tomorrow.

The day wrapped up with Phys Ed and Read Aloud. We are reading Fatty Legs by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton.
