Great job today boys and girls! We got a lot finished!!
We continued to work on our color word charts this morning. The students worked in partners to find better words for color words. We compiled posters that will stay up in the classroom for the rest of the year so we can make better word choices for the colors! We then took a paragraph we completed last week, and replaced some of the color words to sound more exciting!
After recess, we took a close look at the results of our Borax Science experiment. The kids were amazed at our results!!
We also enjoyed yet another beautiful...and yummy...Christmas luncheon! A special thank you too all of the parents and teachers who make this happen every year!
After lunch, we completed three Math stations.
1) Computers
2) Multiplication game with Mrs. Clarke
3) Corrections and practicing Partial Product
We wrapped up the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

Even though we are so close to the Christmas holidays, the students continue to work so hard in the classroom. We completed Day 3 of Centers this morning. We continued to work on the questioning strategy during Guided Reading.
After recess, we completed a Science experiement using Borax and pipe cleaners. We are watching eagerly to see what happens with these materials.
The students then had Art with Mrs. Schentag.
We worked through Math stations after lunch. The students worked through three stations.

We started off the day with a wonderful dress rehearsal for Wednesday's Christmas concert. You are in for a real treat on Wednesday!!
After rehearsal, the students headed down to Art with Mrs. Schentag.
We discussed our Wild Turkey problem solver that we completed last week. The students shared some of their work and we discussed the rubric that was used to assess.
The students then had French with Mrs. Orosz and Phys Ed with Mr. Leidl.
We finished the day by starting a new read aloud, The Secret World of Og.

Great job today Grade 5 with all of your help with Santa's Workshop! It's great to see the smiles on the students faces! Grade 5 will shop tomorrow!!
Even though we were busy with Santa's Workshop today, we squeezed in some writing. We wrapped up our Paint a Picture with Words activity that we worked on with a partner. We will start our individual ones tomorrow using a Metis picture.
We were also able to complete some corrections in Math.
We finished the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We wrote our Lesson 13 spelling test this morning during day 3 of Centers. The students also wrote their TWAS for this week. Please remind your son or daughter to bring these back to school as we have been very forgetful these last few weeks.
After recess, we practiced for the Christmas concert.
We started to work on a Problem Solver today, putting all of the pieces together. We have worked on the many parts in pieces and will work on solving one problem solver from start to finish as I am confident the students will be able to put it all together!
The students then had French with Mrs. Orosz.
We finished the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We worked on Day 2 of Centers this morning. We are continuing to work on the questioning strategy during our Guided Reading time. We will continue working on developing "thick" questions.
After recess, we wrote our Multiplication unit test. The students did an excellent job!! We also started Part 2 of our Multiplication unit by building two-digit times two-digit questions using base-ten blocks. We worked in small groups for this strategy but will move to individual on Monday.
We wrapped up our morning by continuing to work on our partner "Paint a Picture" activity during 6 + 1 Writing. We worked on finding better words for our descriptions and are now working on writing 6 powerful sentences with our "better" words.
We also worked on our Social Studies reviews and corrected them together. Remember that our unit test is on Tuesday, December 11!

The students completed Day 4 of Centers today and handed in their activities. We also began the strategy of Questioning at teacher table today. The students are working on developing good, thick questions before and after reading.
After recess, students worked on the Break it Down strategy and corrections during Math. The unit review was handed back for students to study from for their test on Thursday.
In Social Studies, we corrected Where Did That Name Come From? We will be having a unit test on Tuesday, December 11. We will work on the review next class.
After lunch, we worked through three stations in Science that looked at changing states of matter. The students made predictions and recorded their observations.
The day wrapped up with Phys Ed.

After recess, we completed Math stations. Students continued to practice halving and doubling, as well as breaking it down. Students also worked on their unit review. If they were not finished, students were to take it home for homework. Our unit test will be on Thursday, December 6.

We wrapped up the prediction strategy today during Guided Reading. The students did a wonderful job in discussing how making predictions is a valuable tool in reading. Give yourselves a pat on the back!!

The students continued to work on using Story Maps to make predictions during Guided Reading. The students are doing an excellent job incorporating all of the strategies we have discussed about making predictions...from connections to text features!
After recess, we worked through 3 Math stations. At station 1 we practiced the Halving and Doubling strategy. Station 2 was on the computer practicing our addition facts using Xtra Math. We worked at station 3 to discuss a new multiplication strategy, Breaking it Down. We will continue with this strategy next Math class. Super job everyone!!
We are moving onto our next writing strategy, Word Choice, in 6+1 Writing. We completed a Thesaurus activity today with a partner that helped us practice where to find synonyms.

During Math station, the students continued to practice their addition facts using Xtra Math. Students also practiced their multiplcation facts playing the partner game The Big Table. At teacher table, we continued to practice the multiplication strategy of Halving and Doubling.
We then headed down to exchange our library books.
After lunch, we continued to complete our final draft for Our Most Important Person writing pieces. The students used their Presentation checklists to complete this activity.

The students were introduced to a new set of centers this morning. We also wrote our Spelling test for lesson 11. We also wrote our TWAS for this week. Last week there were quite a few students who forgot to return their TWAS. Please remind them to bring them back on Monday.
After recess, we worked to complete our estimation activity from yesterday. We also worked on some corrections.
We continued to discuss Presentation in 6+1 Writing before lunch. The students are beginning to work on presenting a piece of their writing following the presentation rubric.
After lunch, we discussed the Immigration Canada website and how it could be helpful for a person who has immigrated to Canada.
The students then had French and Phys Ed.
We rounded off the day with Science where we began to work on our glossary for our new unit: Properties and Changes in Materials.

After recess, we worked on using estimation with multiplication. We are using the same three strategies (compensation, front end rounding, and compatible numbers) as we used with addition and subtraction. The students did a wonderful job!!
We moved onto our last activity for the organization trait of 6+1 Writing. Students wrote their own If I Were in Charge of the World poem. Great job everyone!

We finished the day with Social Studies coloring an immigration graph that demonstrates where most Canada's immigrant population is originating from.

We completed Day 4 of Centers this morning. At guided reading, we discussed how using Connections help us to make Predictions when reading as well. We will continue with this activity on Tuesday.
After recess, we began our Multiplication and Division unit in Math. The students worked at their basic multiplication facts at the independent station. I strongly encourage the students to practice their facts nightly as they are essential for success in this unit. At the teacher table, we discussed multiplying by multiples of 10, 100, and 1 000. The links on the blog gave the students an opportunity to practice their facts during the computer station.
The students are also bringing home their Math tests for you to see. They all did an excellent job!! Please remember to sign these and send them back to school tomorrow.

The PJ Gillen Remembrance Day program was held this morning.
We reviewed the study guide this morning for the Math test on Wednesday. Students took home their Math binders to study over the weekend.
We completed Day 1 of Centers after recess. Students wrote their Lesson 9 spelling test and completed a TWAS for this week.
After lunch, students used their graphic organizers to begin their writing pieces on "The Most Important Person In My Life."
We then had Phys Ed with Mr. Leidl.
We finished off the day with Social Studies. We discussed citizenship and the process of becoming a Canadian citizen.

We jumped right into Centers this morning and completed Day 3. We continued to work on our Sticky Note Questions predictions activity during guided reading.
After recess, we worked through three stations during Science. Students worked through a "Get Healthy, Stay Healthy" station where they had to list 2 things they learned after reading each section. At the second station, students read "How Does Technology Influence Your Health" and devoped an idea as to how they would improve their body using technology. The third station was computer based.
Before lunch, we completed our Trends and Challenges activity from yesterday's Social Studies class.

We completed our Prediction activities that we started yesterday during guided reading today. Remember to study for your spelling test tomorrow.
After recess, we completed a Math Huddle about Fractions. Great job Room 20!! We also completed a quick assessment using Front End Rounding to estimate with subtraction. We then practiced using Compatible Numbers to estimate subtraction questions.
We discussed various ways to end our writing during 6+1 Writing. Students worked with a partner to develop a new ending for a given fairy tale.
The students enjoyed Phys Ed with Mr. Schram.

After recess, we completed a Math Huddle about Fractions. Great job Room 20!! We also completed a quick assessment using Front End Rounding to estimate with subtraction. We then practiced using Compatible Numbers to estimate subtraction questions.
We discussed various ways to end our writing during 6+1 Writing. Students worked with a partner to develop a new ending for a given fairy tale.
The students enjoyed Phys Ed with Mr. Schram.

We completed Day 2 of Centers this morning. We started a new reading strategy...predicting. The students did a wonderful job using the title, pictures, and first page to make predictions for their stories.
We completed three stations in Math today. Students worked with front end rounding estimating while subtracting. We also worked on solving a problem where students had to identify the pattern. The third station was on the computer/Ipods.
Students also exchanged their library books.

The students were introduced to a new set of Centers this morning. Students were also given their Lesson 8 spelling words.
After recess, we completed an activity where we tested our reaction times. The students had to try to catch a ruler that was dropped by a classmate. We then completed our Human Body System posters by adding our final body system, the nervous system.
During Social Studies, we cleaned out our binders to get ready for our next unit. The students were also given back their tests. Please sign and return these tomorrow.
After lunch, the students were treated to a Willow Book Award presentation in the library.
We finished off the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud. We are beginning a new book, The Nexus Ring.

We were treated to a great Junior Concert this morning. Flying Bob entertained us this morning with his super tricks and juggling!
We worked through three stations in math. Students practiced using compensation to estimate. We also practiced subtraction with borrowing as our next estimation strategies will be used with subtraction. Students also used the blog to practice their whole number skills.
After lunch, we wrote our Social Studies unit test. I will have these back to the students as quickly as I can.
The students then had French and Phys Ed.

We started off a new week with bowling this morning. The students enjoyed a few hours of having some fun with their classmates!

We started a new set of Centers this morning. Students also wrote their lesson 6 Spelling Test and their TWAS. Please remember to read their wonderful letters home!
After recess, we learned a new estimation strategy...Compatible Numbers. We will continue to practice using this strategy, as well as Front End Rounding.
During Writing, we discussed transition words and how these types of words help our writing to flow better. We identified various transition words in a story that I wrote. We will dig into our own writing next week and try to incorporate transition words.
We then shifted to Social Studies where students tried to write out our national anthem. We also discussed the causes of Western expansion.
Students then had French and Phys Ed.
We finished the day working on our digestive system models. Students will have one more class to wrap up their models.

We wrapped up yet another set of Center activities this morning. Remember to study your spelling words for tomorrow's test.
The students then began working with their groups to construct their digestive systems. I'm excited to see the final projects as the students have come up with some very innovative ideas when constructing the different organs.
We then had Art with Mrs. Schentag.
After lunch, Room 20 went down to the Book Fair and checked out the many wonderful books.
We wrapped up our Problem Solver from yesterday before recess.
The day finished with Phys Ed and Read Aloud. The students are on the edge of their seats for the final chapter of our book, Chocolate River Rescue.

Our beautiful Monday morning started with day 2 of Centers. The students were given their spelling words for Lesson 6.
After recess, we continued to practice expanding numbers in Math. The students have done a wonderful job writing numbers in words, standard form, and expanded form. We will be moving on the estimation very shortly!
Our classroom headed down to Library before lunch.
We continued to work on our Beginning/Middle/End stories in the afternoon. Students are working on stretching the middle of their stories to be more detailed and interesting.
Students finished the day with French and Phys Ed.

Once again I have to apologize for missing a post. We are "fighting" with the server at school!
Students wrote their spelling tests this morning and completed a TWAS for this week during Day 1 of Centers.
After recess, students added the circulatory system to their human body posters. We then moved on to our next system, the digestive system. The students were put into small groups today to start planning their 3-D models of the digestive system. The students have been asked to bring their material for Thursday as that is our next Science class.
We then continued to work on our final draft of our Famous Canadian paragraph.
Our afternoon started off with Math. The students are working on writing numbers in expanded form.
We have discussed various forms of writing numbers. The students are doing an excellent job! Keep up the super work!!

Sorry for missing yesterday's post. The server was down.
We continued to work on discussing making text to text, text to self, and text to world connections during Guided Reading this morning. The students worked extremely hard during day 3 of Centers and were excellent role models for two other teachers who were visiting our classroom from Yorkton.
After recess, we wrapped up the circulatory system in Science by completing a pulse activity. Students performed three different activities and compared their pulse rate for all three activities.
The students had Art with Mrs. Schentag before lunch.
During Math, we continued to work on writing numbers in words and identifying their place value. The students also worked on making a connection to a problem solver they were given. After recess, we continued to work on numbers to 1 000 000. Students worked at one station to find 5 numbers in magazines/newspapers and order then from least to greatest. We also continued to practice putting numbers to 1 000 000 into a place value chart and writing these numbers in words.
In 6+1 Writing, we discussed how stories need to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Students picked an idea and drew a quick sketch for their beginning, middle, and end. We then worked to compile a story using these sketches as a guide. Students were reminded to use a good lead with their story.
The students then had Phys Ed where it was Freebie Friday!

We worked extra hard this morning to complete Day 2 of Centers. We are moving on to the Connections strategy during Guided Reading. We will be making text to text, text to self, and text to world connections throughout the month of October.
After recess, we started our next unit in Math, Whole Numbers. Students searched for 1 digit to 6 digit numbers in printed material. We created a collage of each of these types of numbers. We also worked to construct a variety of numbers using base ten blocks and identifying the value of each digit.
After lunch, we discussed various Canadian symbols. Each student picked a famous Canadian that they will be researching to write a descriptive paragraph.
We then enjoyed French and Phys Ed.
We finished the day working on our posters in Science.

During Math, students wrote a short multiplication equations assessment. We then discussed the Unit Review for the Wednesday's test. Some students did not have these at school or were not complete.
We finished the day with Phys Ed and Read Aloud where we updated our agendas for the month of October and wrote a book review blog entry for Fatty Legs.

The students were given a review today that is due for tomorrow if they did not finish in class today. The third station was on the computer using the links on my blog.

After recess, the students worked to complete their lung capacity activity from the other day. We also started to design and carry out an experiment that will measure our breathing rates. The students are working in small groups to test their experiements.
We continued to work on completing our graphic organizer to compare 2 of the 7 regions of Canada. We will be using a Venn Diagram to compare these two regions next class.

The students worked very hard to complete day 3 of centers this morning. We wrote our spelling test as well as our TWAS.
We started to discuss out first body system in Science, the respiratory system. We will be conducting an experiment next class to measure our lung capacity.
Art finished off our morning.
We worked through 3 math stations. Students worked one last time on writing equations to match word problems. We also started to solve equations. The third station was on the computer.
We finished the day with Phys Ed and read aloud where students are visualizing what they saw during our reading of Fatty Legs.

We had yet another super day today! The students worked extra hard during day 2 of Centers this morning. Remember to study for your spelling test tomorrow.
After recess, the students had Art with Mrs. Schentag.
We continued to work on making connections in Math today. Students were shown a problem and were asked to visualize and sketch what they saw. Students then used these sketches to help them make a mathematical connection to the problem. I am very proud of the connections they were able to make!!

We enjoyed the September assembly this morning along with some entertainment from Mrs. Nagy's class! A job well done!!

Welcome back to another week!!
We wrapped up day 4 of Centers this morning. Students were also given a new set of spelling words for this week. Just a reminder to those students who were absent today...please collect the stations you missed when you return to school.
After recess, we wrapped up our summary activity discussing Healthy Foods. We then discussed Canada's Food Guide and completed a short activity where students had to recount everything they ate yesterday. Students then prepared a graph to compare a healthy diet to their diet yesterday.
In Social, we discussed and labelled a map of Canada.
After lunch, students were assessed in using variables in expressions. We then discussed how wording in problems can tell you what sign to use in an expression. Students worked in partners to match word problems to equations.

Wow!! What a great day Grade 5! Each and every one of you worked so hard today. Super job!!
We completed Day 4 of Centers this morning. The students handed in their completed stations and we will start a new round of activities tomorrow. Remember, keep studying your spelling words!!
After recess, we worked through 3 stations in Math. At teacher table, the students were introduced to variables and expressions. We will continue with this tomorrow. At independent station, students worked on a Problem that had the students figure out how much car payments would be on a car of their choice. The third station was computer based.
Students then took their Narrow the Topic activity that we completed yesterday and wrote a short paragraph describing their topic.
We continued with writing after lunch to compile a list of 4 ideas related to the topic of friendship. We will continue to work on developing our own ideas for writing that we can make personal connections with.
The students then had Phys Ed.
We finished the day off with some Social Studies. We discussed the differences between a country, province/territory, and municipality. We also discussed the boundaries that seperate countries, provinces/territories, and municipalities.

The first week of school has officially come to an end!!
We started off our day with Centers. Students worked to completed their first TWAS together as a group. They will write an individual TWAS next Friday so keep your eyes open!
We worked through three stations in Science after recess. At station one, students were on the computers playing "Heal the Drummer." Station two was a reading comprehension station where students answered three questions after reading a short article. We worked together as a group at station 3 to read an article about remedies. Students were assigned homework to complete a home remedies chart. This chart is due on Monday.
We continued to discuss types of maps in Social Studies. Students completed a Venn Diagram comparing physical and political maps.
Math kicked off our afternoon. We wrapped up patterns and pattern rules and began practicing using patterns in problem solving.
We finished off the day with Phys Ed and read aloud.

After recess, we continued to practice identifying patterns and their pattern rules. The students did an excellent job today!!
Students were able to compile a few of their personal ideas during 6+1 Writing. We will be focusing on using our ideas in our writing. We worked on developing ideas for four different areas.
During Social Studies, we watched a short video that helped to explain what maps are used for and some of the characteristics of different types of maps.
Students then had French and Phys Ed.
We wrapped up the day with Science, where students had to communicate in 4 different areas about what they already know about the human body, and what they would like to know.

We used the morning to review classroom expectations and jobs. We talked about the expectations of our agendas. The students will be bringing these home daily. Please remind them to bring them back every day. Classroom and school newsletters have also been sent home for the month of September.
After recess, the students enjoyed art with Mrs. Schentag. Please remember to bring a shoe box.

As we continue to work hard to finish the month of May and enter June, we are extremely busy in the classroom!! We worked to complete day 2 of Centers this morning. Students wrote their TWAS for last week as the short week threw me off last week ;)
We discussed the various types of clouds today in Science. We watched a short video then tried to be detectives and use the clues in the names of the clouds to match them to their descriptions. The students did a wonderful job with this.
The Measurement math test was returned to the students today. Please sign and return for tomorrow. I will have an updated Markbook for Math shortly. We started our next unit, Geometry, but discussing various attributes of shapes. If students did not get the activity finished in class, it is homework tonight.

The students were introduced to a new set of Centers this morning and continued to work on their author studies. Just a reminder....students are to complete an activity each time they read a chapter. Students are not to leave all of the activities until the end as they will have to then reread the book to focus on each chapter.

We kicked off the week with a new set of centers. Great job today boys and girls!
After recess, we worked through three math stations. 1) Computers. 2) Calculating perimeter. 3) Introduction to area.
We then discussed a punctuation activity that we completed last week.
In Social Studies, we completed a short activity in regard to Simon Fraser.
Students then had French and Phys Ed.
Lastly, students put their finishing touched on their complex machines. We will be presenting them tomorrow!

Students, give yourself a pat on the back for doing such a great job with the AFL. We finally wrapped up this morning!!
After recess, we moved onto our next Writing Trait...Sentence Fluency. We talked about how punctuation can be a powerful tool in our writing to express how we are feeling. We brainstormed how various punctuation marks change our voices and came up with the following:

Another week has come and gone!!
We continued to work on our AFL this morning. Monday should be our last day.
After recess, students began to plan their final design project for our unit. Students are working in groups of 4 to design a complex machine that will move a load. Students have a rubric to follow. We designed our machines today. Students are to gather their materials for next week so they can start building it.
After lunch, we worked through 3 pods in Math. 1) Computers. 2) Unit review. This review is for homework if students didn't get complete. 3) Corrections. Some students are bringing home some corrections that they didn't get to today. These are due for Monday.
Our day wrapped up with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

The students continued with the next stage of the AFL this morning, completing their first draft of their writing piece. Great job everyone!
After recess we worked through three stations in Math. 1) Computers. 2) Practiced using subtraction estimation with decimals. 3) Practiced subtracting decimals. We also worked on corrections from previous assignments.

After recess, students worked on the title page for our next unit in Social Studies. Our unit test will be on Monday, April 23. The assessment will be open book but please encourage your child to review the information before hand.
The students then had Art with Mrs. Schentag.
After lunch, we completed 3 stations during Math Pods. 1) Computers. 2) Students continued to practice estimating and adding decimals. 3) Students were introduced to using estimationg when subtracting decimals. Our Decimals unit test will be Thursday, April 26.
Our day came to an end with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

Students had French and Phys Ed to help round off our day.
We ended the day with Social Studies. Our unit assessment has been changed to Monday, April 23. This assessment will be open book. Please encourage your child to review the material and be organized as open book assessment can sometimes be more difficult than expected.

Welcome back Grade 5! The time after Easter break always seems to fly by. We will be into June before we know it.
As mentioned in the classroom newsletter, we will be writing our AFL this week. Please do everything you can to make sure you are at school for this week. We will be using our morning Center time to complete this assessment. We reviewed the writing process today to help refresh the memories of the students. Our first day of the AFL will be tomorrow.
We completed 4 stations during Math today. 1) At the computer station, students worked to complete the online AFL questionnaire about writing. 2) Students completed a decimal addition worksheet where the questions had to be re-written vertically by lining up the decimals. 3) Students practiced addition of deciamsl with questions already written vertically. 4) Students continued to practice estimation with addition.
After lunch, we continued to practice the writing process.
Phys Ed wrapped up our day.

We started off our day with some writing activities. Students continued to work on "If I Were In Charge of the World." We also worked on developing RAFTS and Ideas/Planning for a given prompt. The third station was on the computer.
After recess, we worked through Math Pods. 1) Students worked on practicing estimating sums. 2) I introduced adding decimals to the students. 3) Computers.
The students then headed down to the book fair with Mrs. Schentag.
Our First Nations Heritage unit test will be on Thursday, April 19. Students will get their review on the Monday we are back after the break.

We wrapped up our last set of Centers before the break today. We will not start a new set of Centers until we get back.
We worked through Science Pods after recess. At station 1, students worked with a partner to identify the various simple machines that work together to make a bike (a complex machine). At station 2, students worked with Mrs. Kulscar to complete their simple machine activity that they started last week. The third station was computer based.
After lunch, we worked through Math Pods. 1) Students worked on converting fractions to decimals. 2) Students estimated sums for decimal numbers. 3) Computers.
Our day ended with Phys Ed and read aloud.
