Students, give yourself a pat on the back for doing such a great job with the AFL. We finally wrapped up this morning!!

After recess, we moved onto our next Writing Trait...Sentence Fluency. We talked about how punctuation can be a powerful tool in our writing to express how we are feeling. We brainstormed how various punctuation marks change our voices and came up with the following:


We then worked in partners to read various excerpts emphasizing the punctuation and how it changed our voices. Try reading the following piece using the punctuation as clues...

A and BC. D? EF, GH and I. JK! LM...N. OP. T! UV; WX, YZ?


After recess, the Math reviews were returned and corrected. The students were reminded to take home their Math binders as their Decimal unit test is on Thursday.

The day came to an end with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

We continued with the AFL this morning. Tomorrow will be our last day.

After recess, students completed 3 pods in Math. 1) Computers. 2) Adding and subtracting decimals. 3) Word problems using decimals. Students also handed in their unit reviews. These will be returned tomorrow for the unit test on Thursday, April 26.

Students then had library with Mrs. Schentag.

We then wrote our Social Studies unit test after lunch.

The day wrapped up with French and Phys Ed.

Another week has come and gone!!

We continued to work on our AFL this morning. Monday should be our last day.

After recess, students began to plan their final design project for our unit. Students are working in groups of 4 to design a complex machine that will move a load. Students have a rubric to follow. We designed our machines today. Students are to gather their materials for next week so they can start building it.

After lunch, we worked through 3 pods in Math. 1) Computers. 2) Unit review. This review is for homework if students didn't get complete. 3) Corrections. Some students are bringing home some corrections that they didn't get to today. These are due for Monday.

Our day wrapped up with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

The students continued with the next stage of the AFL this morning, completing their first draft of their writing piece. Great job everyone!

After recess we worked through three stations in Math.  1) Computers. 2) Practiced using subtraction estimation with decimals. 3) Practiced subtracting decimals. We also worked on corrections from previous assignments.

We continued to work on the AFL during our morning class.

After recess, students worked on the title page for our next unit in Social Studies. Our unit test will be on Monday, April 23. The assessment will be open book but please encourage your child to review the information before hand.

The students then had Art with Mrs. Schentag.

After lunch, we completed 3 stations during Math Pods. 1) Computers. 2) Students continued to practice estimating and adding decimals. 3) Students were introduced to using estimationg when subtracting decimals. Our Decimals unit test will be Thursday, April 26.

Our day came to an end with Phys Ed and Read Aloud.

Remember...tomorrow is early dismissal!

The students completed their first day of the AFL. Great job this morning boys and girls. We will continue tomorrow morning as well.

Students enjoyed Art after recess with Mrs. Schentag.

We then enjoyed a visit from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Students had French and Phys Ed to help round off our day.

We ended the day with Social Studies. Our unit assessment has been changed to Monday, April 23. This assessment will be open book. Please encourage your child to review the material and be organized as open book assessment can sometimes be more difficult than expected.

Welcome back Grade 5! The time after Easter break always seems to fly by. We will be into June before we know it.

As mentioned in the classroom newsletter, we will be writing our AFL this week. Please do everything you can to make sure you are at school for this week. We will be using our morning Center time to complete this assessment. We reviewed the writing process today to help refresh the memories of the students. Our first day of the AFL will be tomorrow.

We completed 4 stations during Math today. 1) At the computer station, students worked to complete the online AFL questionnaire about writing. 2) Students completed a decimal addition worksheet where the questions had to be re-written vertically by lining up the decimals. 3) Students practiced addition of deciamsl with questions already written vertically. 4) Students continued to practice estimation with addition.

After lunch, we continued to practice the writing process.

Phys Ed wrapped up our day.

We started off our day with some writing activities. Students continued to work on "If I Were In Charge of the World." We also worked on developing RAFTS and Ideas/Planning for a given prompt. The third station was on the computer.

After recess, we worked through Math Pods. 1) Students worked on practicing estimating sums. 2) I introduced adding decimals to the students. 3) Computers.

The students then headed down to the book fair with Mrs. Schentag.

Our First Nations Heritage unit test will be on Thursday, April 19. Students will get their review on the Monday we are back after the break.

We wrapped up the week with French and Phys Ed.

We wrapped up our last set of Centers before the break today. We will not start a new set of Centers until we get back.

We worked through Science Pods after recess. At station 1, students worked with a partner to identify the various simple machines that work together to make a bike (a complex machine). At station 2, students worked with Mrs. Kulscar to complete their simple machine activity that they started last week. The third station was computer based.

After lunch, we worked through Math Pods. 1) Students worked on converting fractions to decimals. 2) Students estimated sums for decimal numbers. 3) Computers.

Our day ended with Phys Ed and read aloud.

Students completed Day 3 of Centers this morning. There will NOT be spelling words this week as we only have a 3 day week. Centers will wrap up tomorrow and start again after the break.

After recess, we worked through Math Pods. 1) Students worked to compare decimals using greater than, less than, or equal too. 2) We reviewed Friday's assignment of converting decimals to fractions and vice versa. Students were then introducted to estimating sums of decimals. 3) Computers
Students were then introduced to a writing activity called "If I Were in Charge of the World." The students will be using all of their writing skills to write their own personal version of this poem.

After lunch, we discussed Louis Riel and his impact on Canada's history. Students watched a short video and brainstormed new things they learned about him.

Our day finished with French, Phys Ed, and Read Aloud.
