Students worked hard this morning on their novel studies. Group 1 is working to complete Chapter 11 questions. Group 2 completed The Secret World of Og and will have the opportunity to chose a closing activity on Monday. Group 3 has completed their novel to the end of Book Three. Group 4 completed The Tale of Despeareaux and will also have the chance to chose from a closing activity on Monday.
We completed a Quick Write this morning giving the students practice on chosing a topic that interests them when they are writing.
We began discussing how to compare and order fractions. Students were assigned numbers 1 and 2 on page 172 in math.
Students were given one last social studies period to complete their explorer worksheets ysing the Collections Canada website.

We started our day with our monthly assembly and were treated to wonderful performances by Grade 1 and Grade 2. Our goal is still to be awarded the Broom Award for the classroom!! Any ideas on how we can bribe Mr. Leidl???
Novel studies: Group 1 is reading Chapter 11. Group 2 is completing Chapter 13 questions. Group 3 is working on Chapter 31 questions. Group 4 is working on questions for Chapter 44.
Students worked to complete adding details to their "Special Place" stories and handed them in.
Students were given their individual problem solvers back today. We reviewed the solution to the problem and discussed areas in which we need to work on and areas we did well on. We then worked in small groups to create "Fraction Families."
Remember, book orders are due tomorrow!

Our day began with Math today. We did Pods this morning to help us review fractions. Station 1 worked with a variety of fraction games online. Station 2 gave students an opportunity to create fractions and manipulate pattern blocks to create fractions. Station 3 gave me an opportunity to review yesterday's assignment working with equivalent fractions.
I can't stress enough the important off ALL students getting their homework done on time. It is very difficult for students to discuss concepts in math when they did not complete the extra practice for homework. Please check with your child every night to see if they have homework or not.
Students are assigned an Extra Practice sheet that is due on Thursday to hand in.

Students began working with their partners to find the answers to the Explorers questions provided. They are "exploring" the website http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/explorers/kids/index-e.html together to find the best possible answer.

Another week has passed! We worked very hard this week!!
Students were given a chance to review math this morning before writing the Division test after recess. I will have the tests back to students on Monday. We will be starting our Fractions unit on Monday.

Before lunch we worked on our Adjective collections for the words mad, glad, small, and big. Students worked to add words to the words we already had.
Page 106 and 107 (questions 1(b,c,d,e,l), 2(e,f,g), 6, and 9 were assigned in math today. This page reviews using multiplication to check division and using estimation with division. This assignment is due to hand in tomorrow. Students will be receiving a review tomorrow for the math test on Friday.

We started the day working with our novels. Group 1 has completed chapter 4 reading and questions. Group 2 is in the middle of reading chapter 6 and will continue on Monday. Group 3 is working on chapter 9 and 10 questions while Group 4 completed chapters 13, 14, and 15 vocabulary today and will bein chapter 16 on Monday.

Hopefully we have some luck and get out of this Deep Freeze very soon! We began our day working on our Social Studies timelines. Students have began putting their information into the web site http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/timeline/index.html
We reviewed our previous division strategy in math and were introduced to our second strategy. Students were given 6 questions to practice with.
Students worked together to compile lists of adjectives for the words: big, small, mad, and glad. Students used the website www.visuwords.com to help in finding some exciting new words to use. We then looked at our short stories and began adding the details.

Hopefully everyone was able to stay warm today. Sooner or later the weather is going to have to get better!!
With buses not running we worked on our creative writing expository stories that we started yesterday. I was able to work with those students who wanted some extra help with the division we have been working with in math.
During our assembly this morning, the Grade 5 students presented a cheque to Kathy Franklin from Santa's Workshop. We decided to use this money to sponsor one of the children at the orphanage for a year. We will be in contact with this child through the use of email and will be able to exchange pictures with him or her. I will provide more information as I receive it from Mrs. Franklin.

We began our day with our Novel Studies. Students have been working tremendously hard as a group. Great job Grade 5!
We started an expository piece of writing today that we will use for a number of different activities once we get the basis for our stories. Expository writing does not include the use of first person. Students are writing a story about a Special Place, trying to convince someone to visit.
In Math, we continued to review the division strategy. Students are making corrections to a review sheet as homework tonight.
Students began a personal timeline in Social. For homework, students are to make a list of 10 special events that have occured throughout their lifetime. I encouraged students to compile a list of events that are spread out throughout their life...not all from the same 2 - 3 time period. This list is due for Thursday, January 15.

It's Friday! The week has flown by and we were very busy bees!! Students worked on their novel studies this morning. They have been working well together in their small groups.
We completed an activity that helped the students to realize the importance of adding details to their writing. Each small group came up with very unique "detailed" twists to Cinderella.
In math, we reviewed yesterday's assignment that had the students dividing using multiples. Students were given a review sheet that is due to hand in on Monday.
The Social Studies test was given back to the students and needs to be signed and returned on Monday. They are started to work on the title page for our next unit, "Explorers."

The students did a great job on their Social Studies test today!! As a reward they received free time during computer class! Great job Grade 5! Tests will be given back tomorrow for parents to look over and sign.

Students continued with their novel studies this morning. Group 1 will continue to read their first chapter tomorrow. Group 2 is working on the questions for chapter 1 as homework to catch up to yesterday's work that they may have missed. Group 3 is working on chapter 2, due tomorrow. Lastly, group 4 has worked up the chapter 3. Each group will be at a different place in their novel studies so keep that in mind when checking the blog.
We reviewed the math assignment from before Christmas that we went over yesterday. Students who were not here yesterday because of the weather have a handout that is due for tomorrow that reviews using estimation with division. Students were also provided their weekly problems that are due on Friday.
The social studies test review is also due for tomorrow as the test is scheduled for Thursday. The information that is compiled in the review will be what I pull from for the test.

We are off and running into another year!! The cold weather slowed us down a bit today with buses unable to run but we managed to get some work done.

We reviewed using estimating to find quotients in math. We corrected page 97 in our textbooks which we completed before the break. Students were given a handout that is due tomorrow.

Welcome back!!
