A big thumbs up to the Grade 5's for doing a wonderful job at the poetry recital yesterday. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and support the students.
In social we have been discussing the Pacific Northwest Natives. Students began designing a totem pole representing their own personal families. Students are to use animals to represent the people from their own families.
After recess we completed Day 2 of centers.
After lunch students completed a 3 station pod.
One station had the students work together at the SMARTboard to begin designing a house with a specific number of rooms. Once the house is completely designed students will have to determine the perimeter and area of each of these rooms. I provided a link to the designing website under the math links at the top of my blog page. Students are excited to try to map out their own houses!
A second station had students playing a game against each other. Student's rolled a dice twice and multiplied these numbers together to determine the perimeter of a rectangle. Students were to then draw this rectangle on a 1cm square grid paper.
Lastly, students worked on numbers 3, 4, and 6 from page 130 of the textbook.
We completed the day by taking back our library books and signing out new ones.

We started our day with a new set of Centers.
We then completed our Bridge building activity and will discuss our completed bridges on Monday.
We started to "dig into" area and perimeter in math class. We are looking at the relationahip between area and perimeter. Students are to complete question 1 from page 129. Please use the virtual geoboard link!
Students then watched a short video on the Northwest Pacific Indians in Social Studies. They worked in partners to complete 4 questions.
Have a great weekend!! I hope to see you on Monday for the poetry recital.
Students are bringing home a permission form for the D.A.R.E. program. Please review and return the form on Monday.

Students wrote their math geometry unit test this morning. Once finished students worked to complete the short story their teacher table group was working on. Each group completed one short story and the comprehension questions to go with it.
After recess students were introduced to the Conventions of Writing. Students will be working on the next stage of the writing process: editing. We will be using a color coded method to focus on a variety of conventions.
After lunch, students began a new math unit: Measurement. We discussed the relationship between mm, cm, and m. We also discussed the use of referents when estimating measurement.
Because today is Earth Day students took some time after recess to pick garbage from the schoolyard. Thank you to all students at PJ for helping making our schoolyard a better place!
Please encourage your child to practice their poem for the recital at home.

Welcome back!! It seems as though we are now on the home stretch! Students have jumped right back in to the books.
This morning, we completed Day 4 of centers. All center activities are due tomorrow.
Students then took some data that we collected pertaining to students' favorite colors and experimented with an online graphing program. We will be looking at a unit that covers data collection and probability. This activity was meant for students to get their "feet wet."
Tomorrow is our Geometry test. We will review today. Study hard!!
Reminder: Students will be performing in the grade 5 Poetry Recital on Monday at 10:00. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Students enjoyed a wonderful assembly this morning that showcased the many students who participated in the Music Festival.
We then used the pictures we took yesterday on our Geometry Hunt and labelled the many attributes we have been discussing in class. Students were amazed as to how many attributes they were able to find in the "Real World."
Students then worked on their Exaggeration Poems.
After lunch, we worked on page 244 (#1,2). Students were looking at connections within the classroom and attributes of 3-D shapes.

Welcome to yet another short week!
Students completed Day 2 of Centers this morning. Students worked in their folder table groups and headed outside for a Geometry Hunt. Students took pictures of items within the school yard that represented the attributes we have talked about in our Geometry unit. Great job!!
Students then continued to work on their Exaggeration poems. The poetry recital will take place on April 27 at 10:00. Everyone is welcome!!
We then took some time to finish discussing our math assignment from last week. Students will be competing in the Math League challenge on April 9. If students are interested in practicing they can visit www.themathleague.com.

Happy Friday everyone!!
We started our Friday with some teacher table activities. Each group continued to work on their short stories. Group 1 will continue working on The Rajah's Rice on Monday. Group 2 and 3's Rajah's Rice questions and chess board are due on Monday. The Ideas Peddler questions are due for Group 4 on Monday.
In computers students were challenged to complete a variety of tangram puzzles. They did a wonderful job at trying to create the various objects. The puzzles are available at http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/area/tangram.html.
Math Pods made our math class much more exciting today. Students were given an opportunity to complete a symmetrical game at the Smartboard (http://www.innovationslearning.co.uk/subjects/maths/activities/year3/symmetry/shape_game.asp). The game reviewed with the students the concept of lines of symmetry.
Students also worked on questions 7, 11, and 12 from pages 237-238 in their textbooks.
We also had a review table for Perpendicular Lines.
Have a great weekend grade 5 and good luck to those students participating in the Standards meet tonight!!
